...Tailteann turned to a set of behavioural tests that Padraig came across in college. After undertaking these Belbin Team Role Inventory Assessments (which assessed how the brothers behave in a team environment); Fergal learned that he was a "Calculator".


According to the respected framework, such individuals bring specialist knowledge and skills to a team, they being "self-starting, single-minded and dedicated". They also tend to "provide a logical eye, being both strategic and discerning". Fergal learned that he was also capable of "successfully playing the role of a 'Team Worker', using his cooperative, perceptive and diplomatic ways to benefit the collective".​



Padraig's test results revealed he was...





...a "Sculptor". Considered to be creative and free-thinking, such individuals typically "excel at generating ideas and solving problems in unconventional ways". According to Belbin, Sculptors are also regarded as being highly effective at the “polishing” stages of projects, "as their conscientious personalities subject the work to the highest possible standards of quality control". The completed tests also stated Padraig had a preference for playing the role of a “Resource Investigator”, as exploring new opportunities was something he really enjoyed.



the primary motive behind completing such tests was not to uncover what the brothers were good at but...





...what they weren’t. Now possessing a clearer picture of where they stood, Padraig and Fergal immediately set about addressing their respective weaknesses to ensure there was genuine strength in each thinking-oriented, people-oriented and action-oriented role at Tailteann.


A two-pronged approach would provide the solution. The first part of this strategy would be long-term in nature, the pair making a joint commitment to continuously self-develop in order to become increasingly comfortable with other team roles. The second part was an immediate, obvious one – recruit those who could compensate in the areas they lacked.



just having a complementary skill-set would not be near enough...





...to secure a place on the Tailteann team however. An analogous mindset would also be required. Taking further inspiration from Stein, Fergal and Padraig wished for team members who:


- Could identify with their core values,


- Would aspire to produce “pure, beautiful, inventive” output,


- Would place the needs of the collective before their own.
