PADRAIG

"Second born children tend to be more unconventional and adventurous than their older siblings. They also often excel in areas leftover by the first-born".

Child Development Journal

a SHORT story from padraig's past...

...that affects the choices Tailteann make today.

when the joint decision to form tailteann was made...

...Padraig felt his Undergraduate Degree in Business, his Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship, and his Masters Degree in Business would stand him in good stead. He was also of the belief that the apprenticeships he had served with differing market-leading companies would be really beneficial going forward.

as valuable as such theoretical and practical experience has proved throughout tailteann's existence,...

...the most important business lessons Padraig learned were neither in a lecture hall nor an office. At home upon the family farm as a wide-eyed child exemplifies where such knowledge was actually acquired.

Wishing to teach his second son a lesson in responsibility, empathy and compassion...

...Padraig’s father, John P. presented the opportunity to purchase a soon-to-be-born lamb at a nominal price. Immediately accepting what he felt was a compelling offer, Padraig spent the last of his first communion money on what would turn out to be his first ever profit-making "product". Not that a nine year old Padraig ever saw the lamb as anything other than a unique being who needed to be nurtured and loved like a new born child.

named after the renowned german soccer player of the time, rudi voller...

...his aged mother callously rejected him upon birth, as she felt she had only sufficient milk for his twin, Frank Rijkaard. How this could possibly happen to something so pure and endearing to lay eyes upon, to something so soft and warm to touch, to something so guiltless and gentle to hear bleat, an innocent child like Padraig simply couldn’t understand. With the aid of an infra-red heat lamp and his supervisory father however, Padraig purposefully undertook the role of Rudi’s mother with immediate effect.

bottle-feeding him in a hay-laden, one-by-one metre pen each morning before school...

...Padraig would carefully position Rudi between his knees; close enough to hear his happy heart beat. Upon his return from the day’s classes, Padraig would rush straight to the sheep-shed that adjoins the family house to attend to all of Rudi’s further needs. Greeted with a loving "baa" and lick on each and every occasion; Padraig became so enamoured with his increasingly sociable and comical comrade that the TCP-like smell of sheep dip, which he previously detested, no longer caused any unpleasantness. Though continuously spraying Rudi with cans of Lynx deodorant probably did help greatly in this regard!

developing with each passing week, it was not long before...

...Rudi was mart-ready; something a now hugely-attached Padraig was not yet ready to accept. At such a juncture, John P. explained to his son that a farmer’s purpose is to pour your heart and soul into your produce for the benefit of others. This struck a particular chord with Padraig, it staying with him forever. After saying a tearful goodbye, the sale of Rudi was agreed with a local shepherd who promised to continue to provide him with the very best of care for the rest of his days.

in the aftermath of it all, padraig reflected upon what it was that...

...made his “product” so utterly captivating. After much deliberation, he finally figured it out: Rudi was capable of not only making him intensely feel the six basic human emotions but stir virtually all of his five human senses. Inspired by this thought, Padraig promised himself he would always try and incorporate such a perspective into Tailteann’s future product designs.
